My Teacher Said About Dictionary Is Not True Anymore

One of my sister said when we were in highschool, that words' meaning in dictionary cannot be change nor you cannot add new words... but as the world goes bythe young people keep adding new words and add different meaning to the existing word, that if you fail to watch out for it, you might be sayign the word inappropriate now and a bit off... because sometimes the good word, becomes double meaning now. So I gues what my teacher told us about the dictionary or about vocabulary is not applicable nowadays. Do you agree?

I agree In each language new words are added in the dictionary. And some of these words have double meanings. In some contexts they mean something vulgar.

@luisadannointed All languages do this. New words are added in the dictionary and in course of time, assume different meanings. This happens in my language, Hindi, also. I can cite examples, but it will be against the rule of the site.

I don't know why she said that--I'm sure new words have been added to dictionaries for decades.

Yes, I think she got it wrong or maybe they never anticipated the generations that adds too many words and love to twist words to make it fun and sometimes a green one.

@luisadannointed When I was a kid and teenager, I actually liked reading the dictionary learning about different words.

@LeaPea2417, that's so nice of you. When I was in highschool I love reading story books in the library. Just readign stories, lol!

I agree language is always evolving. New words pop up, old words shift meaning, and sometimes what used to be harmless now has a completely different tone

I beg to disagree with your sister. Dictionaries are constantly updated to add new words and reflect how meanings evolve over time. They’ve been doing this for as long as dictionaries have existed—there’s no way they stay frozen, lol.

Language has always evolved or changed, and many words have garnered new meanings. There's nothing really new about that. As someone once said, "Language is such because how we use it is understood."
