A harrowing incident was reported in one of our local media outlets here in Kenya where a police officer was requesting a bribe from a mother whose daughter was defiled. The poor woman had gone to report that her barely teenage daughter had been assaulted and defiled by a known person, and requested the officer to assist in the suspects arrest. The officer allegedly requested for Ksh. 4000 bribe (USD35) from the woman. Luckily the conversation was secretly recorded and later leaked. The officer has since been apprehended and is awaiting prosecution. I feel such officers are key obstacles to social justice. As for the woman, her daughter’s defiler was arrested by other good officers and I am sure, she justice will be served effectively.

That’s truly heartbreaking, but I’m glad the officer was exposed and arrested. Corruption like that really undermines trust in the system.

So far Kenya has almost everything it needs to be a first world country. But corruption is what continues keeping it behind.

Such corruption must be very hard to counter. I'm glad the officer was caught. Hopefully it will be lesson to others.
