Shoed the homeless away, was it rude?

Yesterday I was on my way home from the pet shop. When I arrived at the gate, I saw a homeless man with a bike hanging out in front. Obviously he was a beggar, but why was he there in front of the gate? I didn't say anything when I went inside but I felt bad for him. He didn't stay there long and left. Once when a homeless man slept there and was scattered, I called the barangay and had him chased away. I also felt guilty but I was just thinking about the safety of the house especially since there were three seniors with me at home. What was more alarming was that the dog didn't bark. It's a good thing the person hanging out was gone when my aunt came out, she could have said something bad. There are so many people who can hang out in front, why is it there at the gate. That's what annoys me, they park their bikes right in front of the gate, don't they understand that we're going out there? Or do I really need to put up a "don't block the person's way" sign?

No, in my opinion, you weren't being rude. They hang out/park in front of your gate hoping you'll feel sorry enough to pay them to go away. Likely, they knew there were older adults in your home so chose to hang there on purpose. I don't like people asking me for money. If they want money, they should get a job and work for it like everyone else.

Hello @DaddyEvil That was dangerous for me. If he knew the gate was not locked he would have take advantage of getting in. Sometimes I give change but that's it. There's just so many homeless asking for alms.

@Letranknight2015 Once, a guy asked me for money when I'd just gotten off work at Walmart. I told him Walmart was hiring and he should go in and apply for a job... He had the nerve to tell me that he'd NEVER work for a company like Walmart... I looked at him and said, "But you're willing to ask a Walmart employee for money? That makes no sense!" He just stood there like I was the stupid person. I went back inside and told an assistant manager that somebody was stopping people leaving the store and asking them for money. The assistant manager called the police and they told him to leave or they'd arrest him for trespassing on Walmart property. He glared at me as he left the lot. What did he expect me to do? He just insulted me!

I hope that many people would help homeless men and senior citizens. But we should respect another beliefs. For me , i should not block your driveway and I will walk away anywhere on the streets.

I'm just afraid they might abuse it so I had to shoe that man away.

I can understand why you felt both uneasy and guilty about the situation. On one hand, it’s natural to be protective of your home and especially mindful since you have seniors living with you. Safety has to come first. On the other hand, seeing someone homeless right at your gate can stir compassion, since you know they’re probably just looking for a place to rest. Maybe putting up a small “please don’t block the gate” sign could help set boundaries in a kind way without confrontation. That way, you can protect your space while still being compassionate to people who might not realize they’re causing concern. It’s a tough balance, but your feelings are very valid.

Homeless here the same..they have no concern of where they are. They think by being in the way, a person will give money to them. You did the right thing. Don't let them encroach on your home and your safety is number one.

That was really too much I mean right in front of our gate @RebeccasFarm I don't see them doing that to our neighbors, they're just a few of them. So, yeah I didn't want them to hang around there.

oh yes, a lot of people do that. Parking infront of someone else's gate. I think you do the right thing. Here, there is a taong grasa that hurts people. Good thing he was taken away now. Imagine just walking out there and a punch will land at your face

Sometimes I also want to put a sign in front of our gate because some neighbors park their vehicles there, especially before when there's a chapel nearby. Thankfully, they already moved to a different location because they might be demolished anytime...
