Sometimes companies really screw up a logo

I will say this--I have never been to Cracker Barrel. I think there is one here in NJ west towards Philadelphia but I've never been. My understanding is that it is some kind of country-style restaurant and store. There has been a lot of drama over the past week because the company unveiled a simplified logo that didn't show an "old-timer" (man) or barrel. They spent $700 million to update the menu, update the logo, and air TV ads.
Well MAGA went nuts about the change to the logo and said that the company went "woke". Again I'm not a patron of the chain and have no attachment to anything about it but the newer logo didn't seem crazy to me. It was just simpler and sleeker. Yeah well people went NUTS about it and even Don Trump Jr. and Charlie Kirk felt the need to call out the company. (there are 2 real winners right there
) Cracker Barrel bowed to public pressure and announced yesterday that they would be reverting the logo back to the original one. Great. I don't care.
What is interesting to me is that this reminds me of Gap's awful attempt at using a new logo back in 2010. I worked there for many years in my high school and college days. I'm still a loyal customer. I remember way back then that there was some kind of study that said people associated the company most with that blue and white logo. So I was as surprised and shocked as anyone when the company rolled out a new logo that was so different and just felt wrong. I wasn't the only person who didn't like it. The new logo lasted about a week before they reverted back to the original one. I was happy to see them do that. I wouldn't have been upset about a gradual change but the totally different logo was a shock and not in a good way.
So I get the whole Cracker Barrel thing. I don't think that "new" logo was terrible but I do understand how people can be attached to one. The company's stock even rose after they announced that they were reverting to the original logo.
