Did you see the press conference? He explained his rationale quite well, followed by Secretary Pete Hegseth who also explained it, and his top general, Dan Caine. The Department of War was established by our first president, General George Washington, and was called that until 1947 when the War Department broke into separate departments for each of the military branches before conjoining again in 1949 as the Department of Defense. Before the name change in 1949, the United States was victorious in every war. Following the change, which was also accompanied by a "change of culture within our military," we were no longer victorious. President Trump is signaling to the world that America is better prepared to conduct military operations in the interest of the American people, and a change of attitude within the ranks is also part of the change. As George Washington put it, which Trump reiterated, "To be prepared for war is one of the most effective means of preserving peace," and thus, the Department of War's primary mission is to ensure peace through strength and project strength and resolve. The founders knew that if you project strength to the world, it would be one of the best ways for us to rarely have to use it. "Department of War" sends a stronger signal to the world about our resolve and readiness than "Department of Defense" does. People want to buy more into the name change than what's really there to see. It's restoring a core department long ago established by our founders that was part of what built our strength and protected our citizens and ensured our freedoms remained intact. Being called the Department of War sends a signal that not only will we defend ourselves against our enemies, and defend our freedoms, but we are PREPARED to fight for it... And win.
