This painting of a brothel is by Vincent Van Gogh a famous painter of those times and continues to be recognised Did he visit a brothel? How else would he know what goes on in there? He surely exposed his private life to the world it seems to me Wikipedia says: Vincent Willem van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. In just over a decade, he created approximately 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of them in the last two years of his life.

Van Gogh did, in fact, spend time in brothels. Historical accounts say that during his years in places like Paris and Arles, he often visited them, sometimes for companionship and sometimes just to find subjects to paint. He wasn’t shy about exposing the raw and sometimes darker sides of life in his art. That’s probably why his work feels so real—he painted not just what was “beautiful,” but what he actually lived and saw. It makes sense that a brothel scene would come from firsthand experience. In a way, it’s less about him revealing his private life, and more about his commitment to honesty in art. He really didn’t hide behind convention.

@allknowing It still exists today, though not as taboo as it was back then. I suppose he wouldn’t have been able to create that painting if he hadn’t been there. I believe the man in the painting is him.

I believe many Impressionist painters had works about the night life in Paris and other places.

Unless they visited they could not have done justice to their works.

Quite likely he did visit a brothel but many have painted about things they've never seen.
