There are mixers and electric grinders these days to do away with a grinding stone
But not so in our household This grinding stone was gifted to me by my husband's grandmother that came all the way from our native place.
It has been well preserved and we use it for various different 'masalas' and rice preparations
The mixers and electric grinding stone heats up the stuff but not so the grinding stone
I have not used it but our maids do

This was once seen in most of South Indian homes. We too had one when I was a kid and it was my duty to grind the masala on this stone daily. I last used it about 8 years back when I had gone to Karnataka on a holiday and there was power failure in the house I was staying. I helped them grind the masala and everyone was surprised to see a city girl knowing how to use this grinding stone.
