Oh the poor library.

People are actively encouraged to come into our (MY) local library not to read but to CHAT. Did you ever? And in they come of course, looking for friendship and conversation, and the opportunity to make noise. People arrange to meet up in the library, social workers meet their clients and tutors meet their tutees or whatever title they chose to be know as. No-one comes for the books, although the books available hold interest for no-one with reverence for the written word - trashy novels that offend browsers in airport “book” shops. Now it’s time to fold up my portable judgement seat and go home to cook dinner. Lasagne - what are you cooking tonight?

I was surprised when our public library stopped accepting the new books that I used to donate to them. I'd buy books that looked interesting, read them and then give them to the local library. I took a large box of books down to donate and was told I'd have to do something else with them if I didn't want to keep them myself.... We don't have any of the little pop-up libraries here to stick them in for other people to take. So I stopped buying new books and switched to ebooks I read on my phone or Kindle tablet. (Our landlady won't let us build one of those little libraries in our yard. I have boxes of books that are stored in our garage now. We don't have room for them in this house.) I stopped going to the local library. *shrug* I have no idea what we'll have for dinner tonight. It's still not even 10 am here. I hope you enjoy your dinner.

They stopped taking books? That sounds insane.

@AmbiePam Yup! That's what I told the librarians at the time. They just shrugged and said they had to follow the new rules, like everybody else.

Our little local library is still reasonably quiet. They do host a lot of events but not in the actual library itself, so that's OK.

I haven’t been to our local library in about ten years. It’s really well hidden in a family neighborhood, and I’m not sure how much traffic it actually gets.
