A Cinematic icon. He acted in some great films like "Jerimiah Johnson, The Natural, 3 Days of the Condor, and The Candidate" along with the classics you mentioned. He definitely had screen presence.
He also had a celebrated career as a director. Two films I really enjoyed was "Ordinary People (which he won an Oscar) and The River Runs Through It."
You could feel his sincerity in many of the characters he played.
