She was a world-famous primatologist and conservationist. She started studying chimpanzees in the 1960s in Tanzania and actually not in a conventional way. She gave each of the animals in the group names. She spent so much time near them that they trusted her. She actually discovered that they used tools to capture ants to eat or performed "ant fishing". The fact that they use tools has some scientists saying that they could be classified as human. She also founded Roots and Shoots which is a group for students to learn about and participate in projects to protect the environment. I have a former coworker who LOVES "Dr. Jane". He has seen her speak dozens of times to the point where she knows him. He went to a group dinner after a speech a few years ago and she actually recorded the voicemail message for his phone. I know he is devastated by this news.

I knew of her from her first involvement with the Leakys. They wanted someone with clear vision to study chimpanzees and she came with no prejudices or beliefs. Her studies are magnificent. I was very upset when I heard the news. She was very special.
