A day of fasting

Yom Kippur started last night. That means about 25 to 26 hours of fasting. I had to eat before sundown last night and I’m only able to eat again about an hour after the sun sets this evening. So far I’m doing okay without any food or water. I hope I’ll make it to the end. To break the fast I was planning on frying lamb shoulder chops, sautéing shiitake mushrooms, and roasting sweet potatoes. I was also planning on making an arugula salad. I was really looking forward to eating this when I realized that cooking is considered work, which you are not allowed to do on Yom Kippur. This means this dinner plan will have to be postponed till tomorrow. Instead, I am going to break the fast with something my mom already made yesterday. There will be chicken broth with carrots and chicken pieces inside, stuffed peppers and stuffed cabbage rolls, and a Russian salad called Olivye. This salad consists of boiled potatoes and carrots, pickles, canned sweet peas, apples, onions, hard boiled eggs, and mayo. My mom will come over with the food and we’ll eat it together. Since you aren’t supposed to do any kind of work today, I decided to read a book to pass the time. It is called French Exit by Patrick deWitt. I did not plan this originally, but I ended up reading the book in its entirety. I have been in bed reading this whole time. The book was 244 pages long. I enjoyed the book and learned that it’s also now a major motion picture. I’ve never heard of it before. Will be interesting to see who plays in it.

I saw an article that said EMTs had to treat nearly 300 people in Israel for medical issues related to the fast. I have hypoglycemia so long term fasting is impossible for me.

Truth be told I don’t like not eating for that long, especially if it makes me nauseous or lightheaded. I only fast on this holiday.
