There are songs that just hit you sometimes. Like Johnny Cash's version of Hurt. What made his version special is that it came from the heart, from a lifetime of pain and bad decisions, and this was essentially a goodbye song. Even if the song was not his, his rendition was a summation that he put his own heart and life into.
Hurt, although a Nine Inch Nails song, will forever be his, and even Trent Reznor has said, "It's Johnny's song."
The thing is, we all get old. Our days pass us by and before you know it, time has passed and we're facing the end of the road. The end is always shorter than the beginning after we reach a certain point.
When you're 20 you can say, "20 years from now I will do this." But when you're 52 the future is less certain, and you're not guaranteed to make it to 72.
Can you look back and say, "I'm happy with my past?" Can you say, "I did all I wanted to?" Can you say, "I hope what I leave behind is something someone else can smile at?"
This song by Frank Watkinson, which he wrote, hits hard. It's melodic. It's reflective. And it's real. It's the story of all of us. In the end. In the final days. I think we can all relate to the words he sings, and the story he tells.
And I am sure you have never heard this one before. But it's definitely one to add to your playlist. If you don't have Spotify, I will gladly post a YouTube link in the comments.

A slightly different version than the recorded one, but it still hits. On a side note, you can sign up for a free version of Spotify. I don't pay a dime and love it and have created several playlists.

Slightly different than the recorded version, but definitely the same song. Here's a link to the YouTube version of it.

This is such a powerful and thoughtful post. You're absolutely right about "Hurt"—Johnny Cash didn't just cover it; he lived it and made it his own final testament. That song is a perfect example of how an artist's life experience can pour into a performance and transform it. Frank Watkinson's song sounds like it carries that same weight of reflection. Thanks for sharing something that encourages us all to look back and think about the legacy we're creating.
