So today is the 80th Birthday of my Dads cousin….Alan. We received an invitation for a meal out from him earlier in the year. We were happy to say yes, we would love to go. Alan used to ring Dad every week when he was ill and he has continued to ring Mom each week since we lost Dad two and a half years ago. Unfortunately a few months ago his wife died very suddenly. Alan had driven her to work as usual and went home …just as he got home the phone rang, and it was Sheila’s place of work. She had suffered a massive heart attack, and although they called for an ambulance, and Alan drove straight back, she had already passed before either could get to her, He was going to go ahead with the meal but last week he realised that he just couldn’t face it. Very understandable in my mind. Not only was it the first Birthday without Sheila, but a big Birthday …80 … and the meal out. We are going to ring him later today ….and take him out for a meal in a few weeks time. Sometimes life can be cruel.

I can understand his pain, but I'm glad you're still going to celebrate his birthday.

I hope so too. He is a lovely man and as a couple they did absolutely everything together. Her passing has left a huge hole in his life. He has been there for us. Supporting us as a family. We would like to do the same for him now.
