So today the weather forecaster told us a storm was coming through. In fact they have told us for a while it was coming. They do that. The worst of it would be on the South Coast of the U.K, named Storm Benjamin by the French weather service.
The winds were forecast to be 50mph for my region with heavy rain over 12 hours. The reality was a 30 mph strong breeze and regular rain in the night. nothing more, nothing unusual. This also happens a lot. Hyping up the weather is a thing now.
The Met Office was formed during World War 2 to help the British war effort. It mostly funded by the U.K government. It was the only forecaster until the internet arrived. The BBC used it for 70 years for their forecast but dropped it about 10 years ago. They said it was cost saving reasons. The BBC will start using the Met Office again next year and the sooner the better. They didn't like commercial forecasting as its rather capricious and want it to be pretty and simple again like the dollybirds reading the forecasts.
Problem is the BBC are committed to hyping man-made global warming and seem to like the weather forecasters to marry the two. If we have extreme weather, without fail the BBC weather forecasters blame global warming for it when in fact it's just weather. When you engage with a privately run weather service its commercial instinct is attract people to the weather site so they view the ads and so a revenue source and so people more likely to use weather apps when weather is classed as 'Bad' or 'Extreme'. I certainly click on the aps more when weather is coming. But the weather often turns out to be normal British weather from their forecasts. This storm was supposed to blow big tree branches down and flood places. Nothing much happened.
There are so many weather apps out there and they are all different forecasts. They have to be unique for people to look at all of them. People want to see the forecast they need to see so keep looking at apps until they find it. I want it to be warm and find one that has more sunny symbols on it for next week. Accuweather is the worse for this commercial approach. On its premium service you can see what it will be doing three months from now, and for each day, truly absurd. How can anyone know its raining with sunny spells on Christmas Day, three months in advance!
Global warming is real but hyping up weather is not the way to push your case. Farmers and outdoor industries and sports events complained because they have to plan for bad weather and exaggerated reports deter farming activity and people attending sports events. Just tell us the weather and be honest please. Today's named storms are yesterday's traditional wet n windys. Google lists 42 weather apps for the UK. 42?

It's nice that we have these contraptions on our phone nowadays. We are really pretty spoiled with all the bells and whistles we can have on our cell phones now. I think that have a weather app is smart especially when going into an area you might not be familiar with. There is also an app that can tell us where Santa's sleigh is closer to Christmas.

I'll stick with Apple's thank you. That's good enough for me.

I'm totally with you on this. In the 'old days' we didn't have named storms, we would just go out in the morning and go it's a bit windy today'. Now we are warned of all this terrible weather on the way - and then it turns out to be nothing worth mentioning. A classic case of crying wolf. If anything really bad is actually on the way no-one is going to take any notice.
