I do still say this although it confuses the younger generation....
We have wall lights , on the... Well, the wall !
Then we have a bigger light coming from the ceiling.
So when we say Put the lights on ... We mean the wall lights.
If we want the main ceiling light on , we say "Put the big light on ".
Anyone else do this still ? ....or ever ...?

I thought it might have been just in the UK so I'm pleased to hear it's other countries too.
I just lit the fire here in the caravan ...it's a bit fiddly, and I caught myself thinking ...why don't you put the big light on ....

I used to when I was younger, or something close to it. We all have the same kind of lights so it's all the same.

I have never said that or heard it before. I always say turn the ceiling light on when we get home.

No, we just said to turn lights on. In the old farmhouse we lived in when I was growing up we just had ceiling lights or lamps on end tables. Those lamps were mostly used if one or two of us were reading and needed more light for that.
In this house, I mostly use the light in the headboard in my bed and we have dim bulbs in the ceiling fixtures. The only room with bright lights is the bathroom. We can turn on the ceiling light if we need more light in the shower/tub but we mostly use the vanity lights above the medicine cabinet in there.
