The value of crime to society.

Most of us play with the fantasy of living in a crime free society and how wonderful it would be. But hold on a minute, wouldn't there be a few down sides as well? Take away crime and you automatically take away rather a large number of jobs. If there were no ne'er-do-wells knocking about there would be no need for the current level of police officers, prison officers, solicitors, judges and all the support jobs that go with them. Insurance companies would go to the wall too. Of course government resources could then be redirected to health, education etc, but society couldn't possibly cope with the sudden shift if all the bad boys and girls turned good. Careful what you wish for.

This reminds me of the Stepford Wives. Remember that movie? If we don't have that bad eliminate in the world life would be dull. It would be nice for a while but ........then what? I guess we won't miss what we don't remember.

Luckily then I guess the bad boys and bad girls will never change their evil ways.

@looeyville Some, even quite a few, change, but I think our police officers’ jobs are safe enough.

@xFiacre Recidivism is high in the USA. Most prisoners are repeat offenders.
