How do you handle feedback that you don’t agree with?

Whether it was from a job performance review or from a spouse or from a close friend, how do you handle feedback that you don't agree with? I think most people would have the tendency to get defensive and say, "That's not true! I don't do that!" Sometimes we lack self-awareness, so the feedback comes as a complete shock to us and we reject it. The worst feedback I ever got was from a long-distance supervisor. I had turned in my employee's performance reviews and we were talking raises for them. One team member, an older lady, was on a Performance Improvement Plan and disciplinary action because she flat out lied to me and spent money she wasn't authorized to spend, but my supervisor gave her a 3% raise anyway even though her performance was very subpar. Then it came to MY performance review. He didn't do one. No feedback whatsoever on how well I was doing or suggestions for changes. Nothing. But here's the kicker, he said I wasn't getting a raise because "You already make too much money." Really? So you're going to reward the slacker on my team and give me nothing? Needless to say, my response to quit and move on to another company.

I usually roll it around in my mind if I don’t agree with it. I ask myself if I’m not looking at it from the correct angle. Then, I pray and ask God to show me if it really is valid.

I do not blame you for leaving your job since your boss rewarded a slacker for not doing a good job compared to you.

In that case, I'd do the same. While it's normal for there to be a raise cap in a company, it was wrong about how this issue occoured. As for me, it's an answer I can't give. Because I don't know. It'd be based on the feedback, or the situation. Most of the time I ignore most things, but a lot of times I walk away from the situation.

I would have done the SAME thing ! ! ! As a matter of fact I HAVE done the same thing when I use to work, cause it's not right OR fair to you.

Your decision to leave was completely understandable. Sometimes, the healthiest response is just to walk away from an environment or situation where you do not feel valued anymore. That's exactly what I did at my previous job, where I felt things were becoming more and more toxic. So, I just decided to move and look for a better one that I truly deserve.
