Schoolies' week will soon hit Western Australia

Our senior high school students finish school very shortly and the tradition is to go away with their peers and celebrate in some way or other. The week after school closes (for them) has become known as 'schoolies' week'. Some of the ways in which the young ones celebrate are better than others. Our seaside towns usually experience an influx of these young people, some of whom do considerable damage to their rental accommodation. Others throw parties which get out of hand with abuse of drugs and alcohol. The authorities have tried various ways to handle such situations including organising dances and concerts with security guards to keep out those slightly older who fancy their chances at picking up the young girls. A news article today says that some schools are addressing issues of sexual health which is well and good but in my day we’d hav had no idea what sexual health even was. Times sure have changed.

Times have changed so much. It sounds so much like spring break for college students. You would think by graduation, they would focus on their future.

Some see it as a last hurrah before they start the really serious study at university.

Sounds exactly like "Spring Break ". If l remember correctly the Elvis Presley movie " Viva Las Vegas" was about young people having fun during spring break.

I am surprised their parents let them run off like that. I never would have been allowed to.

I wouldn't have either but the kids are given a very free hand, too free in my opinion.

I hope so too. It's good that there are no more guidelines and restrictions in place.

I hope so too. The organised dance fests, etc should be safe enough but some always want to do their own thing.
