How much would you pay for water?

Last week I was a steward at a wedding which was followed by a drinks reception before the bride, groom and guests moved to another venue for a meal. Often at these events, drinks would be champagne or prosecco with a similarly sparkling alcohol-free option. But this time the happy couple had chosen rosé wine with the alternative of water.
The water wasn’t any old water, it was Voss bottled water. I had never heard of this but other staff oohed and aahed over the choice. I don’t know whether the guests really appreciated it though, because the water was poured into glasses and the bottles disposed of so unless they could actually tell by the taste, they wouldn’t know what a treat had been provided for them. Anyway I was curious, not least because I have been to Voss many years ago, so when I got home I looked for some more information.
On their website the suppliers say ‘Experience the taste of naturally refreshing water, rooted in Norwegian heritage, where purity meets elegance. Exceptional water starts with a great source and a respectful approach to the earth. We promise that every VOSS bottle is uncompromising on quality and freshness, created to fit seamlessly into your everyday hydration. From classic still to sparkling varieties, your journey to clean, crisp water starts here.’
Well my everyday hydration seems to be just fine with ordinary tap water, but still… I had a look at the reviews on the website of a UK supermarket, which sells Voss water at £3.50 per litre (for comparison, their regular natural mineral water is 25p per litre).
Some examples of the reviews are copied below. I can’t decide whether these consumers have been duped or if they are just taking the mickey! What do you think?
“This water was beyond the best that one could have hoped for, the quality of the skillfully crafted bottle added much to the splendid occasion of a Sunday dinner with the family. Although one may deem it to be a tad bit pricey, it really isn't. Voss water has a quality seal and if you weren't to have this as your regular hydrating drink. Frankly, you would be making a big mistake!”
“Where do I begin, this water is the best to have ever caressed my palette, the design is ambiguous yet bold and simplistic, the easily openable screw lid opening you to a world of water”
“I first tasted this and was delighted at the quality of this Norwegian liquid. My children insist on me purchasing this aquatic delicacy, furthermore it brings a soft taste to the tongue.”

@Fleura We have well water. It does taste different than the water from in town as no chemicals have been added to it. I don't like that water

Oh my! Those reviews (probably written by an adbot) bring to mind that Valley Girl saying, "Gag me with a spoon!"
Yeah... my "everyday hydration" generally consists of a nice cup of tea made with tap water run through a Brita filter.
Does Voss water come in glass bottles? Even then, it's overpriced. And pouring it into glasses before serving probably doubled the yield per bottle but did nothing for the "cachet" of serving designer water.
Soooommme people!

It comes in glass or plastic bottles. In this case they were plastic. I was allowed to take one of the spares (wanted to see what all the fuss was about) and it basically tasted of nothing, which I guess is what water should taste of. I think I will keep the bottle so I can pretend to be into fancy water!

That is hilarious! I’m familiar with Voss water, but I’ve never tasted it. The pipes at my apartment complex make our water taste terrible, so everyone buys bottled water, but I go for the cheapest available. I just want a water that tastes like nothing. Like water should!

I think people are "pulling a mickey" with those reviews. Bottled water comes straight from a tap somewhere and some of the bottled water has been proven to have added chemicals that shouldn't be in water at all.
I prefer my tap water. At least I know the quality and that there is only a touch of chlorine added for safety. (I can't taste chlorine in it but some people claim they can. *shrug* I KNOW the chlorine taste here is less apparent than it is in the water in the surrounding towns.)

@Fleura Dasani is a big brand here. I'll still take my tap water over bottled water any day of the week.
I remember reading about that and laughing my tush off when it happened. I don't filter my tap water. It has to pass stringent tests before it can be released from the public water tower here in our city.

@DaddyEvil Same. We already pay for a clean water supply, why pay again?

There's a difference between just 'bottled water' and water that is labelled as 'natural spring water'. To be sold in the UK it has to actually be what it says.
Funnily enough a couple of weeks ago I was listening to a radio programme (a series about brands that disappeared and what went wrong) - it was all about Dasani water, which I admit I had never even heard of, and why the big launch all went horribly wrong within 6 weeks. Quite a funny story actually. You can read about it here:
