As I'm sitting here watching a snowy winter wonderland forming outside in my neighborhood, it got me to thinking about storms and music. Whether its blizzards, hurricanes, a hard rainfall, or thunder and lightning, songwriters can draw inspiration from the power of nature to use as a metaphor to describe their feelings about a particular topic.
So, here's a few "weather event" stormy titled songs which struck a "chord" with me. See if you give any a "thumbs up" or instead a chilly reception.
5. "Shelter from the Storm"- BOB DYLAN took his inspiration for this 1975 folk-rock song from a line in a Creedence Clearwater Revival's song. This song takes the idea of stormy weather to express the sadness of not knowing what you have until it's gone. It is speculated it was written about the breakup of Dylan's marriage.
4. "Rock You Like a Hurricane"- When it comes to storm songs this was an instant hit in 1984 for the group SCORPIONS. Hurricanes are powerful events and this Hard Rock anthem by this band uses it as a metaphor for a sexually charged rendezvous. I'm not usually a big fan of "Hard Rock" but like AC/DC's "You Shook Me All Night Long" it's a keeper on my playlist.
3. "Riders on the Storm"- As a storm-titled song this 1971 DOORS tune is a classic. This was the last song Jim Morrison recorded before leaving for France where he later died from an overdose. At the end of this song, there are eerie sound effects of thunder, and the faint voice of Jim Morrison whispering, "riders on the storm."
2. "Stormy"- This 1968 tune was a follow up to their hit "Spooky." The CLASSIC IV uses this emotion as a weather metaphor as the singer wishes his girl's mood would return to that cheerful one again.
1. "Who'll Stop the Rain" - According to John Fogerty this was "CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL'S tribute to the weather at Woodstock, as he recounted of his experience there. CCR never had a #1 hit and this classic stalled at the 2nd spot on the charts.
Honorable Mentions: "Lightnin' Strikes- Lou Christie, A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall- Bob Dylan, and Here Comes That Rain Again-Eurythmics...
TRIVIA CHALLENGE- NAME THAT TUNE!
***Can you figure out this mystery song title from the clues provided... Words with quote marks provide valuable hints!
"Anne Murray" was the first Canadian female solo singer to reach No. 1 on the U.S. charts and also the first to earn a Gold record for "this signature song", with this "weather title" (1970). The title of her song is a "common phrase" often used for "Northerners who travel south for the winter." This "element of weather" often occurs in "northern areas" during the winter.
-Can you name the title of Anne Murray's first hit song?
Till the next one...
