I always say my very first job was as a counter person/cashier for a concession stand at a local swimming pool.
My 9th grade History teacher owned the concession stand business at the Jewish Community Center here in Louisville and he asked me to work for him over the Summer. I was 15 years old.
But then I sort of vaguely remember "babysitting" two girls ages probably 7 and 9 when I was 14 for the Summer between 8th and 9th grade I think. I would have been 14 I guess. I got paid for it so I guess it counts as a job.

I babysat when I was twelve, and got paid, of course, but my first consistent “real” job was working with the babies at a daycare when I was sixteen. I had just started college, and I’d work in the afternoons after going to classes all morning. It was a lot of work, and we definitely earned our money. I mean, you know babies can be gross, and then they go and do something that’s more disgusting than you ever thought!

I absolutely was ga ga over my first job when I was 14. I couldn't wait to start working at the library...and when I was promoted from a page to a front desk clerk, I was in heaven. I remember being able to grab what I wanted from the new books; and I read voraciously. I seriously considered making library work my career; but it didn't pay much at all. My starting pay at the library was $.70 per hour when the minimum wage was $1.25.
