This is a 1958 novelty Christmas song that became famous due to the Chipmunks—Alvin, Theodore, and Simon. Animated chipmunks that became very popular and made this song a Christmas classic, especially for children.
At Christmastime 1963 my parents suddenly realized I had developed into an intelligent, innovative, and imaginative little girl. That Christmas they had purchased the 45 rpm record of The Christmas Song because I loved the song and was madly in love with the Chipmunks.
We had a console cabinet where on one side was a record player and on the other the TV. I quickly learned to press a plastic piece in the middle of the record so I could play my favorite Christmas song on the record player. I had it all set up and waited for the Chipmunks to start singing on a Christmas TV special.
Once they started singing, I put on the record and turned up the volume. Suddenly our apartment had a cacophony of chipmunks singing. My parents went by the golden rule of “don’t squash genius,” and they laughed and waited until the song ended and peace returned to the apartment, and they had one very happy daughter.
My favorite version besides the original comes from the film “Look Who’s Talking Now” with Kirstie Alley and John Travolta.

@RasmaSandra Yes, my husband has played it for them.
It seems that they love Jingle Bells and not much else for Christmas songs.
They really dislike Rudolph if you can imagine.

@Juliaacv might I suggest if they have not already heard it, put on the Chipmunks and play it for Harper and Willow?

What a precious memory. I have an old 45 of it. It was passed to me from a family member when I was a child.

@RasmaSandra I thought the same thing about Kirstie Alley when I was watching the clip. It’s so sad she’s gone.
