The old Zen master had been noticed to have been keeping a diary for over 40 years, from when he had become the new Zen master at this monastery.
He carried it everywhere with him, and was often seen making an entry into it, by his students, but, he had never shared anything from this diary to them, over all of this long time.
A student, who was a bit of a rebel, thought that the Zen master was rather attached to his diary, and he thought that it was time for the student to teach the master something.
So, one night, he sneaked into the master's room, got the diary, and burnt it, in the cauldron, in the meeting room, which used to be fired up for the students, on particularly cold days, when they sat idly in meditation.
The next day, as the master came out to breakfast, the student told the master that he had done something to break the master's dependent attachment to diary keeping. He had burnt his diary.
The old master, frowned, or at least, he appeared to do so.
He said:
"When is a diary really a diary, though?"
"Mine was never a diary, as such, as it was being kept as a gift to my students, for after I die, so that they might be reminded of some of my teachings to them, over the years here."
The old master then smiled, and said to his pertinent student.
"Do not worry too much about your rash action here, as my teachings have never been burnt, and still resides in you all."
"This incident of the cauldron will spark remembrance in you when you think of it, and so you will no longer need my diary."
"On the other hand though, the diary you burnt was an empty one, as I kept two diaries, and the precious one, I never do leave it lying around like that empty one, put there, for anyone that tries to destroy, or steal it, as you did last night."
"So, you will all be able to read this diary still when I am gone, just try to take care of it, as any gift given to you should be accepted as a gift, and not despised as being anything else other than what it really is."
"Your thinking was in your mind, and if you had checked in with your heart, you would never have carried out such a rashly brashly act of destructiveness."
The student changed his ways after this, and surprisingly enough, he went on to become the replacement Zen master, when the old Zen master died, not long, after this event.
His name, as the chosen replacement, was written in pen, on the last page of the old master's diary.
The old master had known that a valuable lesson in thought, and heart based actions, had been learnt here, by his student.

The old Zen master's diary was hand written by himself.

I think of "VIP security details frequently use multiple vehicles as decoys to enhance safety and confuse potential attackers or surveillance." The old zen master took care and knew there is evil everywhere.
I am relieved that student who succeded him did not add his own bit in that diary to pass off as coming from His Master's pen. That would have wrong footed and misguided others if the Master did not smell a mouse among his inner coterie.
In fact, there could be corruption even in what is taken as the Gospel Truth as they might have passed through several hands.

Yes, the gospel is written by fallible people too, not by God directly, so are open to interpretation, as even direct words from God need to pass through one's brain to be decoded for us too, and written down as close to his words as we can do so.
Yes, deception, and adding his words to the Master's diary, might have been deemed worse than what he did, as in what he did, he was trying to teach his master a lesson, but he was no way capable, and enlightened enough, yet to do so.
Trying to reach to high on the tree, before we have grown tall enough to gather the fruits there yet, always causes us to suffer some mishap, as we should never obtain spoils, not properly earned yet.
Each comes into their own at the right time. God trains everyone to their own levels, never beyond, until they are so ready to be more highly trained.

@innertalks I have seen many think a few are plain lucky to be born with a silver spoon. But that entails responsibility too as a fool and his money are soon parted.
We need to identify our talents and limitations and then earn our stripes through our own efforts. Life is for the long term and not hit and run.
We all make mistakes but realizing and learning from them take us far. The student did mend his ways and the Master was duly impressed to an extent he made the once erring student a worthy successor.

@Shiva49 /Yes, some a re perhaps given more talents to begin with than others., as it does not seem to be a level playing field for all. God seems to choose favourite sons, and daughters to do his bidding, if we are to believe some of the people chosen in the scriptures, and to believe also the cry of some people, even today that they were called into, or chosen for, what path they have taken in their lives by God.
God seems to have set it up so that certain people are best placed to play certain role, but we also all have our own part to play too, and we should remain humble enough to play it, without forcing our way, treading on toes to get higher than we were meant to climb, by foul means, rather than staying with the talents giving and fully utilising them rather than abusing our position to get to a rank not earned.
