New Year's represents another beginning, filled with hope and anticipation, allowing us to find something meaningful in 2026. So, how about some tunes with "New" and "Year" in the song titles. I really enjoy these 6 tracks, and I'm sure I'll play them a time or two in the coming year. See if any of them, gives you a "Happy New Year's feeling... 6. "In the Year 2525"- The haunting tune by Zager & Evans hit #1 on the charts in 1969 and fits in nicely with the idea of looking ahead to the New Year. Only... this duo really takes a prophetic view imagining what it will be like way into the future. Fun fact: this tune was a one-hit wonder for the pop artists. 5. "New Year's Day"- Gotta have a song with this title and the Irish band U2 provides one. "New Year's Day" was the first U2 song to chart in America, and the first to receive heavy airplay on MTV. This tune is an often-played bar song on New Year's Day (since the title fits). 4. "New Kid in Town"- This is a great track off The Eagles "Hotel California" LP reaching #1 on the charts. The song represents a changing of the guard, in a way like bringing in the New Year. That album was a massive hit for the band topping the charts for 8 weeks in 1977. 3. "Year of the Cat"- The title of this tune written by Folk-Rock Scottish artist, Al Stewart in 1976, came from a Vietnamese Astrology book. The lyrics were inspired from his watching the movie "Casablanca." The tune was his biggest hit breaking the top ten in the U.S. Chinese culture uses an animal to celebrate each year, so this song was a fitting choice and great tune too! 2. "Reelin' in the Years"- One of Steely Dan's most popular songs and a big favorite of mine, however, it was not so much fun for the band's nucleus Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. They hated it. Anyway, a song with time references rings in the New Year with a bang for me. TRIVIA CHALLENGE- NAME THAT MYSTERY TUNE! ***For those who like to test their music knowledge. Here is my "favorite pick" for "New or Year" titled song. Words with quote marks provide valuable hints! 1. Recorded by this "crooner from Hoboken, NJ" this song is about the "city that never sleeps." It's also the place where people congregate to "celebrate the New Year's Eve ball drop." This song helped bring the singer back into the public eye and became a signature tune for the entertainer who is known as the "Chairman of the Board." The artist was one of the most "popular singers of the 1940s and 1950s", a teen idol to his legion of female fans known as "Bobby-soxers." -Can you name this singer and the mystery song? ***There's my sensational six featuring the words "new or year" in the title. Any others you can add to my list? Enjoy the video!
