Our really good friends live about an hour away and happen to own two lady emus. Since there’s no male emu in the picture, there are no fertilized eggs—which means every time we visit, we basically hit the emu egg jackpot. Fresh emu eggs on demand. Living the dream.
A couple of weeks ago, we went over, had a few drinks, and—like any normal adults—ended the night by collecting emu eggs.
We cooked one the next night. I made homemade biscuits and scrambled cheesy emu eggs, and let me tell you… it was wild. ONE emu egg is roughly the equivalent of 12 chicken eggs. I felt like I was cooking breakfast for a small army.
Taste-wise, they’re almost identical to chicken eggs. The only real difference? The shell. Cracking it felt less like making breakfast and more like trying to break into a tiny, prehistoric safe.
Have you ever had emu eggs? Or ostrich eggs? I’ve heard they’re pretty similar—though ostrich eggs are even bigger, which honestly feels unnecessary but impressive. ????

@thislittlepennyearns My college served emu, and I had an ostrich burger at Fuddrucker’s.

@AmbiePam Thats so cool! I wish my college served stuff like that. And I don't even know if we still have a Fuddruckers, or if they are still i nbusiness.

We had a female emu. We found the taste a bit strong but would make sponge cakes in a baking dish. We also drilled a small hole in each end and 'blew' out the contents. This enabled us to sell the shells at a later date to a tourist outlet. The eggs are a beautiful colour, aren't they?

I have never eaten emu or ostrich eggs before in my lifetime.
