Back from the Salvation Army...

I went to the Salvation Army this morning, and some people had already marked their places in line with their bags and carts and what not. It was more "procedural" than the Food Bank--first we stood in line to get a ticket with a number, then we went around the side of the building to stand in another line and wait for them to call our number. If I remember right by a posting I read, five people could be in the warehouse at a time getting food. Once I was in there, I was told I could take two of this and four of that and as many as I wanted of the other. I thought that they had lots of nice stuff in there. Once I was done I went out the back, like the posting I'd read said. As I was heading out, a lady said that a bag by the door was for me. She said they called it a "pantry bag" or something, and that she hoped I liked it. I told her that I was sure I would. I walked home with everything, and have since put it away. The "pantry bag" had a box of Cheerios, a few pouch drinks, a package of Jolly Rancher "rope" candy, and a couple of other things I can't remember. I got bread, a couple of pre-made sandwiches like I've seen at the grocery store, some salad, cereal, two packs of guacamole, five little cartons of chocolate milk, a box of Mocci ice cream, some mac'n'cheese, a package of pre-cooked chicken, and all kinds of stuff that I wouldn't get at the Food bank. I liked this experience. I think I'll be going back the Friday after next (I say that because I have so much stuff to use up now!) Hope that all is well with you in your part of myLot land!

The food banks that I go to hands out numbers. That is so much easier. When I volunteered at a church they put a stop to people putting their bags down early and then leaving and would return just before they opened the doors. I think that giving out numbers is the way it should be done.

I don't think the're's anything wrong with putting bags down early and coming back. I figure they're just saving their spot in line. One Food Bank I went to sporadically handed out numbers because they had so much trouble with people cutting in line.

@xstitcher That is what was usually happening. We have to make appointments at one of the food banks I go to. cause they have so many people coming there now. I like it that way cause there aren't as many people in the small waiting room now.

It sounds more like the first place I went for food last year. It was nice. The second place was the moldy bread place.I’m glad you had a positive experience.

It's good that you know about things like this, and they exist. It really is about people helping people.
