Feeling a bit p**ed off

I don’t usually rant about things but feeling like I need to get this off my chest, sorry! As you know I’ve been working on props and scenery for our village pantomime. Many hours of work over several months. Little One also helped out quite a bit with papier mache and paint over several evenings and Sunday afternoons. Meanwhile at school she also joined the tech team, doing the sound and lighting for the school play. She was interested in helping with lighting for the panto too, but she was previously told that only over-16s were allowed because they have to climb a big ladder to the scaffolding platform, so she didn’t even ask if she could help. So you can imagine she was a bit put out when she saw a boy from her school year-group scampering up the ladder like a rat up a drainpipe to operate the spotlights. He only got involved a few weeks ago when he and a friend were hanging around the hall, asked what was going on and said they were interested so they were invited to help out. To add insult to injury, his name is in the programme for the lighting, whereas hers is not included in the list of scenery-painters and prop-makers, even though every other child who even daubed a bit of paint on a single fish is listed there! The only consolation was that another member who has been involved for decades was also missed off the list of backstage crew. If I complain I’ll just sound like a moaning Minnie and of course it’s too late to change anything. We could just not bother joining again but then she would miss out on any chance… I guess we just have to be more pushy. I think that will be my belated new year resolution! I would be upset if that happened when Pretty was a teenager, too. They should keep the same standards for all kids... Next time she daubs a bit of paint or wants to help in some other way, my voice would be heard, as many times and to as many people as necessary to get her what she wants and deserves.

Another time (if there is one) I will have to be more on the ball, and actually ask who is putting the programme together and whether they have got all the information they need. In previous years they have put a list to be checked but this year we didn't see anything of it, if it existed. They also spelt my name wrong yet again even though I have corrected this several times in the past!

@Fleura Surely by now they know how to spell your name! You've been doing that for several years. Asking might be the best way to make sure the list is all-inclusive.

@DaddyEvil No apparently they don't. I would have thought they must be just copying and pasting the same mistakes year after year but they can't possibly be otherwise there is no way they could have missed off another long-standing member!

I would say something Especially about the laddie and the ladder. How old do you think he is?

I did ask about the lighting rules - the man who is actually doing the lighting is a lovely man and apparently when someone put it to him that anyone going up the ladder should be wearing a safety harness he basically told them where to get off. Unfortunately Little One must have just been in the wrong place when the wrong person spoke to her and she didn't know the situation was any different (and neither did I).

That would upset me too. I also wouldn’t care if I sounded bad, I’d point it out anyway. I mean, I’m not going to be grouchy, but you wouldn’t do that either.

They make a big deal about how they are a big family... Ironically this year they have written a piece in the programme about how they are a big family and one of the families who has been involved for many years lost their teenage son 10 years ago this week so the final performance will be dedicated to him - and it's his father whose name has been missed off the backstage crew list!

I would be so upset, too, but agree that you should be more pushy and make sure that never happens again. They sound a bit disorganized, so heads up!

Oh no, I would be mad, too. I think I'd say I was disappointed to see she hadn't been credited for her work but not say anything about the lighting until the NEXT show when she wants to work on the lighting and they try to use the "over 16" excuse.

Yes, I think I will point out the omissions because she isn't the only one as I said. And another lad who is working on the sound also wasn't credited for work he did on the scenery earlier.
