A Little Bit of Spain

My ex-daughter-in-law recently returned from a trip to Portugal and Spain, and she came home bearing gifts. Unfortunately, one of her suitcases was confiscated because she forgot to declare the items inside, an expensive lesson learned the hard way.
Thankfully, she was able to keep a few things and shared one of them with me: traditional Spanish cookies called mantecados from the Monasterio de Santa Inés (the Santa Inés convent) in Seville.
They’re sweet, similar to shortbread, and absolutely delicious.
Across Spain, cloistered nuns bake these treats, and they’re especially associated with Christmas.
She told me how the purchase works: the nuns use a torno, a wooden lazy Susan, so they never have direct contact with visitors. You ring a buzzer, speak through the wall, place your money on the torno, and it turns back around with the cookies or pastries you ordered. I find that fascinating.
Spain is on my bucket list. I’d love to go during the famous tomato-throwing festival, La Tomatina, and also visit cloistered nuns in Seville and Madrid to buy some of their handmade goods.
Have you ever been to Spain, or would you like to go?
This photo is one of the cookies she brought me back.

The cookie sure sounds good!
Spain would be lovely to visit, but it isn’t on my bucket list. I think it shows my lack of imagination that my bucket list places, if I had them, would be places that primarily speak English as their first language.
I don’t trust myself to get around well, otherwise.

Someday I wish to visit Spain. We are a bit familiar with the culture and even the language because we were colonized by Spain for over 300 years. Our old land titles are called Old Spanish title. All old legal documents are in Spanish language.

I'm glad she could keep some of the things in her suitcase.
It's an interesting way to purchase items. I'm glad the cookies are good.
I hope you can get to Spain.

Spain was never on my bucket list. I wanted to go to England, Scotland and Wales.

I spent a month in Spain back in 2001. It was my first visit there and I didn't speak a single word of Spanish - not even 'Si'. I had a wonderful time! People everywhere were so friendly and helpful and I managed to learn enough Spanish that I could order food and buy things and even book tickets to the Alhambra over the 'phone.
