Yesterday I posted about our scheduled power outage. I looked for a picture to go with it and I chose an old picture of our garden (because there is a power line running along the boundary). And then when I looked at that picture I realised how much neater the shrubs used to be and how overgrown they have become. So I decided that it was the ideal opportunity to do some pruning since I wouldn’t be able to get sidetracked by doing stuff online. It looked like a chilly, dull day but actually once I went outside I found it was lovely. I put my overalls on and started on the shrubs and in no time of course I was absolutely boiling! At ‘coffee time’ I went inside, where Big One and our Italian lodgers were huddled round the fire wrapped in fluffy blankets, and dug out one of the ice-lollies that have been in the freezer since the end of summer, which the Italians thought was quite amusing for a British January All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2026.

Yes, and it's the right time of year to prune a lot of things.

I can't imagine working outside. It hasn't been above freezing here in weeks!!!!

No that would be way too cold. I wasn't risking frostbite! Here it's about 40F.

You earned it by working up a sweat. At least it wasn't snowing on you (as it keeps doing here).

No, thankfully, otherwise no doubt I would have had lots of snow dumped down the back of my neck!

It's amazing how warm you can get with a little exercise. If I complained about being cold, Mum would send me out to sweep the verandahs which went almost right round the house. I only complained about twice I think.

Yes I keep offering the girls work (I even offer to pay them for things that are not routine daily things like washing the dishes) but still they are not keen,
