Why do expensive toasters got to eleven ?

The big question of the new year is why do toasters have five settings? If I put two bits of bread in on number one they come out light brown and just right. Anything above two is equivalent of putting popcorn in a nuclear reactor, pretty much carbonised to diamond hardness. Who exactly wants toast as black and hard as a Redwood tree in a forest fire? What's going on with that? Do toaster makers think people will pay more for a toaster shaped like a winnebago because this one goes to eleven?

People put a lot of different things in toasters, not just bread. But bagles, pop tarts, strootles, waffles, pan cakes. Yu name it, someone's going to toast it. We also have different bread with different thicknesses andtextures that require different settings to toast. That's why.

Bread on fork Infront of fire.
Was always the best way of making toast.
I like toast as you describe.
Can't stand it hard and brown.
Neither can my lovely wife,
