Earlier today, we lost Eric Dane at just 53 years old after his courageous battle with ALS. Even typing those words does not feel real.
Like so many others, I first came to know him as Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey's Anatomy. “McSteamy” could have easily been nothing more than a charming nickname attached to a pretty face, but Eric gave that character depth. Beneath the confidence and the smirk was vulnerability, growth, and heartbreak. He made us laugh. He made us roll our eyes. He made us cry. And somehow, he made it all feel authentic.
He went on to show a completely different strength in The Last Ship, carrying the weight of leadership and responsibility in a world falling apart. Then in Euphoria, he reminded everyone just how fearless he could be as an actor. Cal Jacobs was complicated, uncomfortable, and painfully human. Eric did not shy away from that complexity. He leaned into it.
When he publicly shared his ALS diagnosis, it would have been understandable for him to step away quietly. Instead, he chose honesty. He spoke openly about what he was facing. He used his voice to bring awareness to ALS and to stand alongside a community that fights every single day for research, treatment, and hope. That kind of courage goes beyond acting. That is real life strength.
ALS is cruel. It takes far too much and far too quickly. But even in the midst of it, Eric showed dignity. He showed love for his family. He showed up for fans. And he helped shine a light on a disease that desperately needs attention.
He will be missed for the characters he brought into our homes, yes. But more than that, he will be missed for the heart behind those performances. For the bravery he showed in his final chapter. For the way he turned something devastating into something that could help others.
Fifty-three is far too young. The loss feels heavy.
Rest peacefully, Eric. Thank you for the stories, the honesty, and the strength. You will not be forgotten.

You and I have talked a lot about him since he started getting really sick, and I was shocked how quick it stripped him of everything.
