Can you make gravy?

Sounds weird, doesn't it?
I grew up cooking. Taught by my grandmothers and my aunt, I put it all together in what worked for me and for my family when I married and had children. Cooking is just what we did--you knew how, you made food for your family. I always tried to be sure my children could have their friends over for a meal or two, or that we could have other family and friends over, when we had the opportunity and the time.
So now I am considered the ''older generation'' in my family. Every time I am invited to a family member's home, or a friend's home for a holiday dinner, I hear the same thing--''let mom made the gravy, she makes it the way we want it'' so there I am, standing in their kitchen making gravy. Midwest people are apparently gravy people--sausage gravy, gravy from red meats, gravy from pork, and gravy from chicken, turkey, etc.--if there is broth or meat juices, they make gravy.
Not long ago, my older son stopped by to see us and to see his brother and his Mom. We always enjoy this, his work brings him through at times and it's a treat to get to spend time with him. He had called that morning to be sure we would be here, and of course I said yes, come for dinner. He said, I hope dinner includes your mashed potatoes and gravy, Mom. Of course I got busy and made sure they were on the table for both of my sons. And they had a gravy discussion--about how no one knows how to make gravy anymore. They buy it in dry mix packets to add water, they buy it in cans or in jars. But they throw away their meat juices or broths from cooking and buy the fake gravy. This makes no sense to me at all.
Is gravy standard in your area? I can personally take it or leave it--I enjoy it once in awhile, but not to the extent my children and grandchildren do. My youngest daughter makes delicious gravy. My oldest daughter is married to a man who is a gourmet cook, he makes wonderful gravy and great foods. My two sons have tried but mostly made flops, despite all of my trying to teach them.
Gravy, gravy. My adult children still love gravy.''Make lots, Mom!''

It seems to be something that many just either don't want to make it, or have no clue as to how to make it. It does seem that most of us old school people do know how to make gravy!

Well, I am not a southern woman by any means, but I did spend some years of my childhood in the deep south. I know they make some mean gravy, you are right!

Oh, my mom and grandma made delicious gravy from scratch. They taught me to do it as well, but unfortunately, I don’t remember exactly how to do it. I remember the basics for sure, but I couldn’t do real gravy justice. That being said, I’ve never bothered with store bought gravy or gravy in a packet. If it’s not home made, I don’t bother. Which is better for my waistline!
I’m ready to try your gravy, Marie!

Oh, I wish you were closer so you could just stop by to have dinner. That would be so much fun!

I do know how to make it and have done it before, but I find it a bit easier to make it from a packet if I am going to have it, but anything of that processed stuff contains so much sodium. However, the thing is if you make your potatoes from scratch you are kind of saving it on there. I guess I might make the gravy next time just to save some sodium.

Gravy is really not a thing here and we don't prepare it in our daily meals. We get gravy from buying chicken only from fast food chains.

We do not have gravy every day, far from it. It's good, yes--but probably not the healthiest thing to serve. It's more of a treat most of the time.
Here, the chicken fast food chains like KFC, etc. serve potatoes and gravy. The potatoes are instant and the gravy is made from a prepared mix.

I haven't tasted it in years. A long time ago, KFC used to be good. But it isn't good here now, they don't seem to ever have customers, the reviews are terrible, and it's ridiculously expensive. I have heard they do better overseas then they do here.

@MarieCoyle Each person has his/ her own style of cooking and therefore the taste of curry also varys.

Very true. When it’s made from scratch, it’s never just like anyone else’s.

Our gravies all taste different--depending on what type of meat broth or drippings a person is using, extra broth, seasonings, etc. No two cooks make gravy that tastes the exact same way, unless of course all they are doing are heating up a jar or a can of it, or making it from a packaged mix.

You can donate them to your local library, I think--or you can give them to your Home Extension office, I know where I used to live, people did that. Just some ideas for you.

You can use any kind of stock--chicken, beef, turkey, pork...but you need to learn about amounts of flour and such. A person can make gravy with butter, yes. Many people make it in the skillet they friend meats or chicken in, and use the shortening in that pan and the little bits and pieces, along with thickener and stock.

Gravy is so easy to make. Keep going and you have good cream of whatever soup- mushroom soup etc. I put gravy in my pot pies. Yesterday when I made a cherry pie I used the thickening technique for gravy and put the mix into the pie for thickening. We're vegetarians but milk gravy is good without cow or pig in it.

I make gravy for pot pies, too. And of course it's easy to make cream of whatever soup as well. I never understood buying it at the store (full of sodium and who know's what) vs. making homemade.

Yes I can make 'proper' gravy but it can be difficult to make enough! My partner is often the one cooking roast dinners and he generally uses the shop gravy granules although he will mix in the meat juices as well - and I confess that gravy granules these days are a lot better than they once were.

There are mixes, etc. we could buy to make them with. Yes, when my sons are both here they want a LOT of gravy. I totally understand the struggle.

It's not an every day item over here, either. But the kids do like it, so I will make it for them if they are around.
It's great that your sons are good cooks!

If there are mashed potatoes, my family thinks there should be gravy. Especially my sons...I used to say they went through so much of it, it was like a beverage to them rather than a condiment. I never have any go to waste, for sure.

I don't use them...way too much sodium and chemicals, and honestly an unnecessary expense as well. Besides, we are spoiled and like homemade better. But you do know how to make gravy, that's good.
