When did a Marathon become a 100 metre dash !

United Kingdom

Now, I remember when a snickers bar was called Marathon. I’m sure many of my MyLotter friends remember that too. I don’t like it being called Snickers but as I have absolutely no say in the matter Snickers it is ! I have just felt a bit peckish and gone to get a Snickers …opened it …found it a third of the size it used to be. I know the saying ‘ size isn’t everything ‘ …..but honestly…. This isn’t a Snickers ….its a Marathon ….no….this isn’t a Marathon , …..it’s a 100 metre dash ! Chocolate makers BEWARE …..we know you are short changing us with our chocolate bars …..we won’t stand for it ! Have you noticed the same ?

I didn't know a Snicker's bar ever had a different name. *shrug* I prefer a Milky Way, though. Yup! The King Size bars are the regular size ones and they charge you as if you're buying two of them. I'm sure the makers of the Snickers bars or any other candy would be happy to make them the old full-sized bars for triple the price.

I know you like Milky Way ….you had two just the other day ! Yes, they make them smaller and charge more for them ! Unfortunately, it’s chocolate, people like it and will pay. I always try and stock up when it’s on special offer.

@Traceyjayne Very true. We try to go in after holidays and buy some but I couldn't see this last holiday so we missed out. *shrug*

But we are standing for it. Chocolate bars have been in decline size wise for 30 years yet, have more than trebled in price in real terms, and we are buying more and more of them, As for Snickers I don't like nuts in my teeths

People won’t stop buying chocolate ….they have to pay the price no matter how high. I try and get it on special offer. I don’t mind that ……lol

Yes I have noticed, but I rarely buy them anyway. You might think that with the price of treats like this going up, it might help with the problem of obesity, but apparently not - both are going up in parallel!

Hershey Bars used to be $1 for 8 oz. Now they have made them smaller and raised the price considerably. There are dozens of other products like this that have shrunk in size.

It’s a disgrace isn’t it ! Yet there is nothing we can do about it . We can only stop buying things, but thats not fair on ourselves and we have to eat !

@Traceyjayne I don't know if the manufacturers think we are stupid and won't notice that the product size is smaller.

I looked this up: Snickers was sold as the Marathon bar in the UK from 1967 to 1990. When Mars, Inc. introduced the Snickers bar to the UK in 1967, they renamed it Marathon to avoid the original name rhyming with a word considered inappropriate in British English and to better appeal to local consumers. The bar itself was identical to the American Snickers, featuring nougat, caramel, peanuts, and milk chocolate. This branding lasted for 23 years, until 1990, when Mars standardized the product name globally and reverted to Snickers in the UK.
