I helped a student buy a new guitar last night!

He's an adult student, in his 50s or so. He's been with me for a couple of years on acoustic (non-electric) guitar. His own guitar has been a $219 Yamaha 335, the one I recommend to "new" students. He said he would get a Martin (one of the best guitar brands) when he thought he had earned it. A couple of days ago he bought a used Martin, but said he would not keep it until I "blessed" it. I played it and wasn't that impressed. I think he paid about $750. Last night, we spent our lesson time playing a bunch of Martin guitars in the back room. We found a Martin dreadnought for about $950 that we both agreed was the best of the lot. So he'll return the one I did not bless, and have a guitar we're both excited about. To top it off, it was my buddy Kalib who "worked with him," so Kalib will get a "commission" on the sale of the guitar. Wheee!

God bless someone who will pay that much for a guitar. It must really mean something to them, and that is really cool.

I find the $950 Mexican-made guitars to be quite good. You can spend $2000 more for a US-made Martin, but the difference in overall quality is not that great.

That's definitely a lot of money. But I'm sure it's worth the price.

It's a Mexican-made Martin, so the cost is about $1800 less than one made in Nazareth Pennsylvania. I have played several Mexican-made Martins and find them to be of really good quality.

It varies widely. The "diminishing returns" curve applies. A $250 Yamaha is 85 percent as good as a $950 Martin. And a $950 Mexican-made Martin is 85 per cent as good as a $3000 US-made Martin.
