Are our grandparents’ recipes actually healthier than ours?

"There’s a huge trend right now called 'Retro Rejuvenation'—people are ditching the fancy 'superfoods' and going back to the basics: sourdough from scratch, fermented pickles, and slow-cooked stews like our grandparents used to make. I spent my morning trying to recreate my grandmother's old soup recipe, and it made the whole house smell like childhood. ?Do you have an old family recipe that you’ve 'resurrected' lately? Mine was her Creamy Roasted Tomato & Basil.. i want able to take a photo of the soup, as my kid ate it up.

My sister has most of our family recipes. My grandmother’s especially are good, but they aren’t exactly as healthy as my mom’s. In my grandmother’s day though, ingredients weren’t so full of junk additives.

Both my grandmothers and my aunt taught me to cook. I grew up cooking their recipes, but other than baked goods such as desserts, cookies, cakes, etc. recipes were never really written down. They made them from memory. I have always been glad they taught me to cook.

@cuttyrish I have a lot of favorites. So do my adult children and my grandchildren. I love baking cookies, because there are so many different types of them. My kids all love when I make them homemade chicken and noodles, and I like to bake bread. There are a lot of things I enjoy cooking. I use cooking somewhat as a therapy at times, it gives me time to think, and I enjoy creating food dishes that others enjoy eating.

@MarieCoyle nothing beats homemade chicken noodles, its comforting, you can whatever you want and its healthier than instant noodles.

Our Grandparenrs recipes were naturally healthier as they contained pure ingredients and no additives or preservatives. They were a generation that knew how to use as much of the food as they could, If a joint of meat was cooked the meat usually did several days meals, leftovers being made into cottage pie etc….the bones were boiled to make broth, and veggies used to make soup.
