Dozens feared dead as heavy evening rains pound Nairobi

Eldoret, Kenya
March 7, 2026 2:34am CST
Friday 6th March left more damage than good after it ended with a heavy downpour in the Kenyan Capital of Nairobi. The city, never remarkable for proper drainage systems was caught unawares and most of its roads turned into rivers, sweeping cars and any other obstacle downhill. As at Sat. 7th March, over 10 bodies were collected from a nearby recreational park while more others were found stuck along the banks of rivers and drainage lines outside the city. Over 200 vehicles were destroyed too. Other victims were electrocuted in their homes as water found way into the residential areas too! It is a sorry state of affairs but I also blame it on poor leadership that doesn’t put into consideration proper planning in a city that holds over 5 million people!

That does sound like poor planning. It would be hard now to install some of what's needed. That's very sad that so many were killed.

As at 7.am Sunday 8th, 28 deaths had been confirmed. The figure is likely to increase! The system is eating its people. Incompetent people are employed through corruption, nepotism and tribalism. Degrees are not rewarded here.

@SIDIKIMPOLE The corruption, etc, that you mention is very hard to combat. I'm sorry for countries with such problems.

So sorry to hear of the deaths of those people. Very sad. There is flooding during heavy rain in our country too. And also other countries that are considered first world countries.

But if there is poor urban planning, there is likelihood of more losses

A very corrupt regime. No hope. All they know is to embezzle public funds with their fwends and politicking 24/7

It has turned into some sort of blame game. The county government accusing the National Government, The Senator blaming the Governor, The governor blaming residents for careless littering and so forth
