Night visitor

We had friends to stay at the weekend and they brought with them a motion-activated night-vision camera. They set it up opposite what is obviously a well-trodden gap in the fence between us and our next-door-neighbours, and were delighted next morning to see photos and videos of a whole series of visitors. First was a fox. A bit later along came a female muntjac deer, followed not long after by a male. And then most exciting was this badger. Why is a badger particularly exciting? You may wonder. Well basically because we have already seen both deer and fox in the daylight, so we know they are around. But we’ve only seen a badger once in the nine years we’ve lived here. Obviously we’re just not out at the right time. The one time I did see a badger I came out of the garage in the dark and almost fell over it as I walked across the garden! Notable by its absence was any sign of a hedgehog, sadly. Hedgehog populations are declining in the UK and I haven’t seen a live one in several years now. And just to confuse sentiments even further, badgers are known to both compete with and prey on hedgehogs, so while seeing more badgers is good news it could be bad news for the hedgehogs. I would love to see a badger here in our garden. Or a fox, or a hedgehog Sadly, none of the above. I have no idea other than they cannot open gates. So we don't get any wildlife visiting the garden which is sad

Foxes can jump and climb really well, so I don't think the lack of a gate would stop them. What sort of area do you live - town, suburbs...?

@Ineeddentures There are more urban foxes than rural ones these days.Messy humans just make city life so easy for them.

I would have been over the moon seeing a badger. I always wished I'd had one of these cameras on our smallholding.

I was happy to see it - but sad if badgers have driven away the hedgehogs.

Up north I see deer, black bears, rabbits, red foxes, coyotes, raccoons, snakes, turtles, geese, birds of all kinds, and once a bobcat. That’s more than enough for me.

That would be enough for me too! I'm not sure how I'd feel if there was a bear or bobcat in the garden!

I love seeing any wildlife. Cool about the badger. I'm sad to hear that the hedgehogs are on the decline. I have seen a fox, turkeys and lots of deer tracks.

Behind my apartment complex are mainly foxes and rabbits. The coolest thing I’ve seen is a roadrunner at my dad’s back door.

That’s cool! I get an occasional groundhog. During the snow I saw raccoon tracks in the snow. Mostly I get squirrels, birds, and cats.

Here in Missouri, we see raccoons, possums, deer, squirrels and rabbits but we aren't out at night watching for animals, either. If we were, we might also see a bear or two.
