Being Typecast

I was listening to a sportscaster last week, and he was making a comparison about an athlete and actors being typecast. He named “Ross” from Friends (David Shwimmer) as an example of someone who was so good and so well known for one role that they never really did anything else substantial again. That made me think of other actors who were so closely associated with playing one role that they couldn’t get past it. I wondered if maybe the actors who played the Brady Bunch kids fit that criteria. I wasn’t born during their initial run (I don’t think), so I’m not sure. Can you think of any other examples?

There are tons in our local show business. Most of the actors playing the role of antagonists never get out of that role at all. And I could name tons of them but I'm sure you know none of them as they are our local actors.

It’s a shame so many can never get past one thing.

You could probably put Matt LeBlanc (Joey) in that category too

It happens to many of them. Billy Drago was a villain, bad man in many shows.

Yeah I know of one such example. The actor who played the role of Shri ram in a daily soap of the Ramayana here couldn't get other roles mainly because the audience had associated him with a divine figure ...so no director would cast him in other movies or shows...sad

Oh yes, I can think of several: The guy who played Kramer from Seinfeld Adam Sandler does goofy silly funny roles, nothing serious. Jennifer Aniston usually always ends up in a RomCom "Rachel" type of role Melissa McCarthy - physical comedy and over-the-top making bumbling mistakes

Just now
Steve Carell as Michael Scott. But he did go on to make a lot of movies.
