The area developed as a fishing village after the Lielupe River formed an estuary in 1755, leading to the establishment of a fishing community. It is home to the Jurmala Open Air Museum, showcasing local history and culture. The region features one of Latvia's highest dunes, Ragakapa, enhancing its natural beauty and attracting visitors.
