Do athletes deserve the high salaries they receive?

I have given my opinion before about the number of divas in the NBA and thugs in the NFL.
I don't understand how an athlete makes such an absurd amount of money.
Where are our priorities as a country? We resent paying for healthcare premiums yet we'll shell out $200 for a Lakers or Broncos ticket to watch a game?
The President of the United States makes a salary of $400,000.00. Our soldiers and first responders are making a fraction (1/10th) of that.
What does this tell you about how we've made athletes idols?
What is your take on this?

@looeyville Actors, sports people pop stars etc such be on minimum wage. Garbage disposal people however, are worth their weight in gold.

I totally agree with you. Soldiers have never received the funds they should get for risking their lives and if they survive they then face emotional problems because of what they've witnessed ..... perhaps we should classify them as athletes, afterall what they have to do on the front lines would make a football player cring, maybe a ruby player wouldn't but neither has to deal with deadly weapons.

Considering how much money they make for the owners of the sports teams, I think it is justified to get a large amount in salary. I mean, sure, other professions deserve to be paid far more than they are, but other professions don’t bring high amounts of income to anyone.
