Yesterday I mentioned the interesting overload we had with this band and current/former members in the mid-80s. And waddaya know, thanks to alphabetization, here the band is! We continue the look back 40 years with one of the dominant acts of the decade.
Throwing It All Away - Genesis
Programs! Get your programs here! Can’t tell a Phil Collins solo song from a Genesis song without a program!!
Honestly, I had trouble keeping up with which was which. Collins was so prolific, and his songs were all hits. Then Genesis released a band album, Invisible Touch, and IT was successful! Then along came ex-Genesis lead singer Peter Gabriel and he’s got the biggest hit of his career!
A funny note I found regarding Gabriel’s success with “Sledgehammer”: it knocked the single “Invisible Touch” out of the #1 spot. Collins later said that they were busy with the tour and weren’t aware of that, or “we would have sent him a telegram saying, ‘Congratulations, b*st*rd.’”
(For the record, they remain friends even after Gabriel’s departure from the band…in fact, Gabriel sang back-up vocals on Collins’ song “Take Me Home.”)
This song was written by guitarist Mike Rutherford. Don’t read anything into the breakup lyrics (“we cannot live together, we cannot live apart”): he’s celebrating his golden wedding anniversary this year!
Great songs aren’t always inspired by heartache.

You know I know better:
