So most of the ladies here (and some of the fellas) have watched the movies or read the books, the tails of sisters looking for a man of means. Back then ladies had no real rights, or employment and education status, back then so had to marry a man that could look after them. Attractive higher society ladies had the pick of the rich bachelors and their sons. The Bronte sisters sort to climb that ladder in their novels.
Interestingly, now women have equality in pretty much everything - their own mortgages, careers, money and travel, the ladies at the top of the ladder still want to marry up. It's an anomaly. A smallish group of successful men in western society still gets the pick of that crop. But now that group of women is growing as there are not enough men of means to go around. Sadly, they still need to be attractive to get the husband they desire. The not so attractive intelligent and moneyed ladies in the group tend to go without a man now as they are not prepared to lower their standards to marry beneath them. The rich and successful ugly guys just sit back and get an attractive woman anyway. The likewise attractive women simply dont have that luxury.
In the UK the class system has been rigid for a while. Middle class people rarely marry working class people, even today. The true middle-class generally despise those people. Even with university expansion in the 1990s where the two social class were finally forced to mix in a social setting still a low cross-class uptake.
Guys should also be held to account as fewer and fewer people hook up in the new century, marriages down 40% in the U.K in the last 50-years. They go for looks and body first and then compatibility. But women tend to want to be with a man that offers them the chance to stop, or reduce, work so they can have kids with a man they love, the carrot and eat it. So we are now seeing fertility rates fall in career women. The age of the middle class spinster is here.
