Time on our hands - is now on our phones...

I haven't worn a wristwatch for 15-years. We no longer have time on our hands. Now it's our phones. We have to carry our phones so know need for a watch, right? They made the choice for us, right? For some reason the big names in watchmaking haven't gone bust. Kodak film went bust because of mobile phones and digital cameras but Casio and Timex live on. I suppose it's like Vinyl LPs hanging around for nostalgic reasons.
Clocks are a thing of the past. We have them in our house but the batteries run down and the clock get put away some place. Time flies, if you can see it, when you get older.
This began in the 1980s when retail stores and banks decided that you didn't need to see a clock on their premises .The psychology here is consumers who lose track of time more likely to spend more money in store, in theory. The reality is they are late back to work at lunch or miss their bus. My battery was flat on my phone today and I could not find a public clock anywhere. Even the one on the main big church in the town center that would tell all the town th time back in the day when no one had a timepiece had stopped. I asked a lady the time and they looked at me funny as if I was hitting on them.
The idea of starving us of public clocks is nothing new. Las Vegas do this stuff all the time. The huge hotel and casinos want you to lose track of time so you gamble more. No clocks, no daylight. They covered the old strip with a roof to again bewilder punters to keep betting. One hotel had this ceiling that would constantly change from day to night images all day long. Casinos dont have mirrors either as they want you to go in their thinking you are James Bond ready to play Blackjack and not catch your reflection to see Mr Ordinary in a bad shirt with a little too much timber on the waistline and a little less action on the hairline. AT one point 87% of US dollar coins ended up in Vegas.

I still wear a wrist watch. I don't like taking my phone out of my bag just to see the time.

All so true. I was late today because the kitchen clock was way slow and needs a new battery. I had the time on my laptop but didn't think of looking there for the time. Just 'kept an eye' on the kitchen clock. Sometimes I worry about me.

I found it difficult to explain to my little students that we used to have clocks with pendulums and how they worked.

I still wear a watch at times. I dislike taking out my phone to check the time, especially in busy or crowded places.

Our town hall clock has been stopped for a while.
I look up every time I pass the building on the bike
I always say to Yvonne
" It's five to five"
