I Am the Only Daughter... But I Have A Sister

Confused? You are not alone.
In our store, the regular customer already know my mother has only one daughter which is me.
Here's the moment of confusion which I caught people off guard even if it wasn't intentional.
My sister is having a breakfast in our store with her co-officers, some of them is new, getting familiar with everyone. Then, I walk in casually, seated right infront of her, started picking food off her plate just like she sometimes does with me.
Comfortable, natural and normal, at least for us. But not for them.
In our peripheral view, we noticed the reaction that's when we laugh together at the same time. It's like we're in on a little secret that the newcomer hasn't understand yet.
When my sister introduced me as her sister a followed questions comes rushing without end. Like how can that be? You are morena while she has a fair skin? You don't look a like and you never call her mother a mother?
It just that some things don't fit neatly into the way people have expect. Being an only daughter doesn't mean being an only child. Having a sister doesn't always mean what people assume it does at first glance.
Families are layered, relationships are nuanced and labels don't always tell the whole story. Maybe that's the point, confusion isn't a bad thing. It's a way of understanding something deeper.
So we're you confused too?
Or did you already have an idea, and just needed me to say it out loud?
tell me what's on your mind? no judgment.

Well, my sister Debby was an only child (for four years, anyway). But my brother was also an only child (before my parents adopted him). He's also my cousin (we were already related on my mom's side before they adopted him). So, I'm my own cousin (because my cousin's sister is my cousin, too). However, yes, sometimes you can choose your family.

@Jehanne ah, so your mother only has one daughter, but your father doesn't. Certainly she's your sister!

Oh, yes, I have a “sister from another mother.” It’s great to have friends that deeply woven into your life.
