Just to show you how difficult the 1966 list was, I had to kick this song out of the top ten. What an amazing year for music! Let’s go back 60 years and enjoy this great tune from that year! Hooray for Hazel - Tommy Roe Tommy Roe!! Wow, what a star in the 60s. Yes, they call his music “bubblegum,” but songs like this, “Sweet Pea,” and “Dizzy” are great songs to sing and dance along to. And heck, people are still covering “Dizzy”! I love this song, one of the few rock songs I actually heard back then. You’ve got a nasty, self-centered “love ‘em and leave ‘em” woman who eventually gets what’s coming to her (“there’s tears in her eyes”). All with a great dance beat! Roe is 84 now, and he still sporadically performs. He released a single in celebration of his 80th birthday in 2022. Oh, my, this brings back a huge memory. My Dad remarried a few years after he and my mother divorced. His wife, my new stepmother, was named Hazel. He made up a few lines of that song to suit himself, as I recall it was ''Hooray for Hazel, she brought me to life, Hooray for Hazel, I made her my wife.'' And every time he sang his little ditty, she smiled.
