Unlike the 1956 song, I was alive when this one came out…but I was listening to country music in 1966 (as you’ll see later in the countdown
), so I didn’t get to hear this when it originally came out. That’s okay: as I said, music is out there for all time. Get your groove on with today’s 60-year-old timeless song!
634 5789 (Soulsville, USA) - Wilson Pickett
A couple of “remember when I said…?” moments. First, if you go back to the year-end review list of 2025 music obituaries, you’ll find Steve “the Colonel” Cropper in the top ten. He co-wrote this song. I’ve also mentioned that Wilson Pickett, although he was born in Prattville, Alabama and died in Reston, Virginia, is buried right here in Louisville!
I’m almost embarrassed to say where I first heard this song: Johnny Van Zant, Ronnie’s little brother, released an album in 1980 called No More Dirty Deals. Since I was stationed in Jacksonville, and the Van Zant clan was from Jacksonville, the stations in town played the album a lot. That included his cover of this song. While that actually is a pretty good cover, I’m glad I discovered the original.
Fun fact: the title is a nod to “Beechwood 4-5789,” a hit by the Marvelettes in 1962. That particular song was co-written by Marvin Gaye.
Celebrate the greatness of Wilson Pickett with this one!

I did not know you where stationed in Jacksonville. Funny story we went to New York City in Marines. I a dumb Cali dude, how cold can it be, pretty damn cold.
My homie lets me borrow his Florida Gators jacket.
I never had so many comment on something I wore and in New York City. Cool Jacket, hey sexy I love the jacket. Homie gave it to me, no one comments to me when I where it. I was like not my team but no one cared. People sure are funny and see what they want to see. I do have respect though, cool people respect such a place and song has great soul. Not many have soul like that.

Coldest day I endured in the Navy was in Jacksonville, believe it or not. It got down to 10F.
Cool story about NYC.

@FourWalls Wow, I did nor know could get that cold there. I think people could tell I was a Cali guy wearing a arch enemy jacket. I would not go that far but some people do.
