How do you deal with friends that avoid you when you are broke

April 12, 2026 11:16pm CST
Sometimes life can throw financial challenges at you unexpectedly. You were helpful to friends but this same friends avoid you when you are broke. I have experienced this and at a time I was really frustrated. But they came back as if nothing happened when I was able to pull through. I decided to pull back from them and they were like I'm not handling the situation well as it wasn't their fault. Do you think keeping such friends I worth it no matter their excuses?

Never let money matters into a friendship Never borrow money from anyone Never lend money to anyone Doing these things will eventually mean friendships end

@augusta123 I still wouldn't borrow it from a friend. And I would not lend a friend money either Depending on who it was and what the money was for, and what amount was involved I might gift the money But I will not ever lend anyone any money

You are better off without them. Being financially broke does not mean they have to avoid you. They can always be honest with you.

I would strongly suggest dropping those friends and never looking back. They are not real friends, and do not deserve your time.

It's not worth keeping those friends at all. I got rid of all of them.

Real true friends don't base friendship on how much money you have. If they are avoiding you because of your income, or lack of income--they are not friends at all.

When you have money you have friends, when you don't longer have money friends would disappear

@augusta123 I don't consider people who do that to be real friends.
