I watched Crime et châtiment (Crime and Punishment). It was made in 1956 and it's a French version. It's loosely based on the book Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky. I'm still listening to the book (I'm on part 11). This movie has Robert Hossein, René Havard, Albert Rémy, Marina Vlady, Ulla Jacobsson, Bernard Blier, Gaby Morlay, Gabrielle Fontan, Roland Lesaffre, and Gérard Blain in it.
Big Warning: some violence and one suicide.
This movie has changed the names of the characters from the characters in the book. So Rodion Raskolnikov is René Brunel. He kills the pawnbroker with a knife not an axe like the book. He only commits one murder (not two like the book). The man who wants to marry his sister basically admits to murdering his wife to René. That man tries to force René's sister into marriage and tries to give her money, but it doesn't work and she refuses to take the money. He gives the money to Lili Marcellin (Sonya) who is a hooker. Then the guy kills himself. Lili gives the money to René. She pleas to him to confess to the murder of the pawnbroker and he does.
I sorta liked this one. I'm watching next Crime and Punishment 1959 (USA version).
