Dads Army is a very British situation comedy and may not transfer well to foreign audiences , especially with subtitles but to us it's the perfect 1970s sitcom. It's a little bit offensive in places as everything was in the 1970s but never meant to be and it's warm heart washes over that. As always the British class system is the backbone of the jokes and everyone in it a strong character performance, no stragglers here.
It was based on the writers of he show Home Guard experience during WW2. The home Guard was made up of those guys that didn't go to war for whatever reason and mostly older men willing to defend Great Britain from the Germans with limited weaponry but plenty of ingenuity.
The joke is always that they generally bungle things up and not the most slick outfit where the domestic warfare training goes but the likeable characters and how they tackle preparation works well for comedy situations.
They are led by the pompuss Captain Mainwaring ( Arthur lowe), the local bank manager in the small town by the sea who acts above his social class and rank to lead the men. His number two, Sergeant WIlson is from the upper classes and his corporal is the local bumbling butcher. Every character has a different type of laugh to deliver.
When you are down you watch this and it's just makes you smile and lifts you up even though you have seen the episode a hundred times. Back then we were a different country and a proud country and many would go back their in a heartbeat.
Its beautifully written and acted and packed with very British laughs. Love it!
