Staying at a Pet Motel

I brought this up on the phone to my dad, and it made me thankful for my accommodations while I was in college. When my dad was working in Tulsa, he’d come to the OKC area to attend the theology program for ministerial students that took place on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays at his college. But you couldn’t stay on campus unless you paid for a meal program, and my dad didn’t have enough money for the meal program. So where’d he stay? He’d stay at the Pet Motel across the highway. There was one room in the back of the motel they rented out to my dad when he was in town for school, and his friends let him shower in their college dorms. Nowadays, I don’t think they would do that. But back then my dad did what he had to do. I moved into the dorm when I was in college, but it was always so loud I’d get migraines. I then moved into an apartment (I worked, but had a roommate), but not to too long after I had my wreck and had to move back in with my parents.

The pet motel doesn't sound like alot of fun. I never saw it, but when my nephew was living on campus and in a dorm room..apparently it was the size of a larger closet. Everyone was amazed they could fit a bed in there. He must have been right on top of his TV. He moved to an apartment as soon as he could. My dorm rooms were close, but not like that~

It’s amazing what people can fit in places. My dad had a cot. I’m sure your nephew was very relieved to get away.

I guess one has to do what’s best at the time.

Thankfully, he only had to do it one semester. Which is definitely long enough.

My mother was my only supporter with dad long gone. Luckily at that time in the late 1970s heading into the 1980s, universities near home were not as expensive. I found out I could get a grant that one I did not have to repay. I had to keep applying every semester. I went to Long Island University, Brooklyn Center and traveled to and back home each day. I worked for me and actually I had not even wanted to go somewhere far from home.

@AmbiePam @fleura You do what you have to do. When we were on a road trip in Southern Africa in the 70s we got lost outside Pretoria and at last saw a motel. We camped every night so a motel was a real treat. It was called the Pony Motel and we all rocked up at the reception desk to be told it was only for horses.

Never even heard of a pet motel. Is that for boarding cats and dogs?

Yes, for cats and dogs. He was a tough guy to deal with those circumstances.

Your dad grew up in my era where you just did what you had to do.

I stayed in a dorm in my university and had three roommates. One was my high school best friend. I was fine with having roommates coz the room was big enough for us. The university dorm provided each of us with four huge closets and a study table as well. Your dad did what he had to do.

Some of the apartments our son has been looking at are minute - just so cramped.

I think it is quite enjoyable to stay at a pet motel. I would spend the whole night playing with the dogs and cats. Hehe

I haven't experienced living from other house or dorms while I was a student. My mother won't allow that because she knows we might skip eating something nutritious or might skip some meals.
